Frequently Asked Questions

Why are Trex® products better than ordinary timber decking?

Trex Composite decking offers you superior durability far superior to any other timber decking that you can buy right here in Perth. Trex Composite decks are stain and scratch resistant, they will not rot, splinter, they are mould resistant, and there is never a need for staining or painting.

The superiority of Trex Composite decking lies in the high-performance shell that encloses the three exposed sides of the Composite deck, and the exposed underside which allows each deck to breathe. Creating a superior product that braves all weather conditions.  The Composite decking is made from 95% recycled materials, making Trex Composite decking not only luxurious and resilient but the environmentally friendly choice you can feel great about.

What is the difference between earlier Trex and the third generation composite decking?

Early generation Composite Decking
Early generation wood-plastic Composites, represented a breakthrough in the decking industry. They required a considerably lower standard of maintenance, they never had to be stained and did not rot, wrap like wood. Although early generation Composite decking achieved leaps and bounds in decking innovation, they were not stained, scratch or mould free.

They also require periodic cleanings with composite deck cleaners. If you own an early generation Composite deck, we supply an environmentally friendly cleaner called Corte*Clean® to help maintain your Composite deck. Please see Composite Cleaner page for more information.

Third Generation Composite Decking
WCT Distributors here in Perth only supply Trex’s high-performance third generation Composite decks.

Third generation Composite decks are manufactured with a high-performance shell that wraps around each Composite board to protect it from the elements, providing resistance to fading, staining, scratching and mould. In addition, third generation Composite decks provide:

  • Cost effective maintenance: Third generation Composite decks, unlike first and second generation Composite decks, do not require Corte*Clean® to maintain their sheen. All that is required to maintain your Composite decking is the occasional cleaning with soap and water.
  • Enhanced aesthetics: Trex’s Transcend® Composite decks come in four high definition tropical colours: Spiced rum, Lava Rock, Tiki Torch, and Island Mist. Whereas, Trex’s Contour® decking comes in four exquisite colours: Torino Brown, Chateau Grey, Moroccan Red, and Honey Brown.

How do I care and clean my Trex Composite deck?

Trex decking requires far less maintenance than wood decking, but like any other thing dust and dirt build up over time. So to maintain your deck some form of periodic cleaning is required to keep the deck looking brand new for decades. Trex third generation Composite decking simply requires a simple soap and water cleaning.

If you own one of the early generation Composite decks, you require periodic cleanings with composite deck cleaners. If you own an early generation Composite deck, we supply an environmentally friendly cleaner called Corte*Clean® to help maintain your Composite deck. Please see Composite Cleaner page for more information.

How do I remove Ground dirt from construction of my Trex Transcend decking?

A pressure washer with no greater than 3100 psi***** that has a fan attachment/adjustment and soap dispenser may be used to remove dirt, concrete dust, or other types of construction dirt. Spray deck with soap, and then follow by gently scrubbing each deck board with a soft bristle brush.

Spray/rinse each individual deck board using fan tip no closer than 8” from the decking surface. RINSE THOROUGHLY. If dirty water from cleaning is left to dry, this will cause a film to remain on the decking surface.  Use of a pressure washer greater than 3100 psi could damage the boards and void the warranty.

Can Trex Composite Decking be Sanded or Power Washed?

You should never Sand a Trex Composite Deck. Sanding will damage the protective sealing around the Composite deck and will void the warranty with respect to any conditions caused by sanding.

Trex high-performance decking (Trex Transcend and Trex Contour) can be power washed. Use only a fan tip and up to a 3100 psi power washer to remove dirt and debris. The fan tip should be no closer than 8 inches (20.4 cm) away from the protective shell during use.

Does Trex Decking get hotter than pressure-Treated Wood under the Sun?

On one of Perth’s hot 40 degree days, nearly any surface will get uncomfortably hot, and it would only be wise to wear a pair of shoes if you planned to walk on them.

In extensive studies conducted by Trex, it has been found that the colour of a decking board, regardless of whether it is made of wood-plastic composite or wood, will retain heat due to the wood component of each deck. Trex Composite decking tends to retain a bit more heat than ordinary wood decking.

Is Trex Composite decking Suitable for use in Commercial Settings?

Trex Composite decking has been manufactured with durability, and longevity in mind. The durability of these Composite decks makes them suitable for both commercial and residential settings.

Here in Perth many business and organisations have chosen Trex as their go-to decking. You can find Trex composite decks at Curtain University and at the King Edward Memorial Hospital.

Can I cut a groove into my Trex decking?

Grooves can be cut into the side of Trex decking by using the TREX GROOVE Cutter, which then allows you to use the Trex Hideaway® Hidden Fastener system. The Hidden Fastener system allows for deck installation without visible screw heads on the surface of the boards.

For greater convenience, we also offer Groove edged boards which are boards which come pre-grooved, ready to install the Trex Hideaway® Hidden Fastener system.

Can I Rip a Trex Composite Board?

Trex Composite decks can be ripped to reduce the width of the board. However, a Composite board should never be ripped to reduce thickness. Please see the Trex installation instructions for more information on how to install Trex boards without voiding your warranty.

Can I glue Trex Composite boards together?

Glue cannot be used as a primary fastener. When using Trex Fascia, glue can be used as a secondary fastener – see Fascia instructions in the Installation Guide for more details.

Can Trex Composite boards be placed over a solid surface?

Trex composite boards can only be installed over a solid surface using a sleeper system. Please see the sleeper system guidelines in our Installation Guide

Can I paint or stain my Trex Composite deck?

Trex third generation Composite decks come with an unyielding, high-performance shell. The high-performance shell works to ensure that your Composite deck retains its high definition colour and, keeps your deck free of splinters, rotting, and insect damage.

Due to the protective shell, Trex Composite decking should not be painted or stained, as there is no need for these time-consuming tasks.

What is the protective coating which encapsulates each Trex Boards?

Trex boards are co-extruded with a high-performance polymer shell or coating. The coating is engineered to be scratch and abrasion resistant, making Trex boards perfect for extremely high levels of commercial or residential foot traffic.

Trex prides its self on wear resistance of each Trex board. They conduct extensive in-house testing to ensure that Trex boards are both scratch and abrasion resistant.
